Chrostosoma fenestrina (Butler, 1876) Butler, A. G. (1876). Notes on the Lepidoptera of the family Zygaenidae, with descriptions of new genera and species. Journal of the Linnean Society of London, Zoology 12: 342-407; p. 383 (as Laemocharis fenestrina). 4. L. fenestrina, n. sp. Nearly allied to the preceding species, but the basal area of primaries less opaque, and a much broader hyaline patch (covering the greater part of the disk) beyond the cell of primaries; body below (excepting anal segments), bases of wings, inner margin of primaries, and costa of secondaries white: expanse of wings 27 millims. Brazil. B.M. "The preceding species" in Butler is his no. 3 (p. 383), which he does not describe but only lists: 3. L. haematica = Glaucopis haematica, Perty, Delect. pl. 31. fig. 6. L. zantes, Herr.-Sch. Auss. Schmett. fig. 240. Brazil. B.M. Hampson, G. F. (1898). Catalogue of the Lepidoptera Phalaenae in the British Museum, vol. 1, Syntomidae: p. 216 (as Chrostosoma haematica; in Suppl. 1, 1914, p. 147, Hampson removed haematica Perty and zantes H.-S. to Saurita and stated "the species will stand as Chrostosoma fenestrina, Butl."). 451. Chrostosoma haematica. Glaucopis haematica, Perty, Del. Anim. Art. p. 156, pl. 31. f. 6 (1834); Kirby, Cat. Het. p. 137. Laemocharis zantes, Herr.-Schaff. Aussereur. Schmett. i. f. 240 (1854). Laemocharis fenestrina, Butl. Journ. Linn. Soc., Zool. xii. p. 383 (1876); Kirby, Cat. Het. p. 137. Dycladia chalconitis, Druce, P. Z. S. 1883, p. 378, pl. 39. f. 10; Kirby, Cat. Het. p. 145. Dark brown; patagia with crimson spots at base; abdomen with dorsal crimson basal spot and lateral series of metallic blue spots; thorax and abdomen whitish below. Fore wing with cloudy hyaline streaks on basal half below costa and in and below cell; a series of clearer hyaline postmedial streaks between veins 2 and 7. Hind wing whitish, with diffused terminal brown band widest at costa and in submedian interspace. Hab. Ecuador (Buckley), type chalconitis in Coll. Druce; Brazil, 2 males, type fenestrina. Exp. 30 millim. Type zantes in Coll. Staudinger. Draudt, M. (1915). Chrostosoma. In: Seitz, A. (ed.), The Macrolepidoptera of the World, vol. 6, The American Bombyces and Sphinges: p. 67 (as Ch. haematica; corrected in the Additions and Corrections, p. 200: "for haematica insert the name: Ch. fenestrina Btlr., haematica and zantes are to be eliminated, there only remains the synonym chalconitis"). Ch. haematica Perty (= zantes H.-Schaff., fenestrina Btlr., chalconitis Druce) greatly resembles the preceding, but on the vertex the blue colour is absent, the wings are in the basal part more smoky hyaline and on the hindwings the continuation of the marginal band towards the base is shorter. From Ecuador and Brazil. "The preceding" is decisa, which Draudt describes thus (p. 67): Ch. decisa Wkr. (12 k) has like the following a black-brown body, carmine-red spots on the shoulder-covers and on the middle of the first abdominal ring; metallic blue lateral spots; the underside is white; in contrast with the following species, the vertex and metathorax are spotted with metallic-blue, and the brown marginal band of the whitish hindwings sends forth a long continuation towards the base below the cell.
